Sony profits from iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6 sales
There are a lot of Sony smartphone fans out there, but, sadly (for the company), not enough, or not as many as the Japanese manufacturer would have hoped. Regardless of its Xperia line-up (flagship or not), Sony didn't quite manage to sit at the same table with Apple or Samsung, for instance. However, Sony profits from Apple's and Samsung's smartphones, and, it profits even more when it comes to the latest iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6flagships.
Components inside the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6 are made by Sony. We're referring to the image sensor. The iPhone 6 has not one, but two Sony sensors inside (one for the main camera, and one for the webcam), generating roughly $20 revenue per phone for Sony. The Galaxy S6 also uses Sony's image sensor (and this is all strange because both the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6 seem to produce slightly better images than the Xperia Z3 for instance).
In order to cope with demand, Sony will invest an additional $375 million in its image-sensor factories. Initially, the forecasted investment was $900 million, announced earlier this year, but apparently the business needs more.
